Milano (Pavia) - Sanremo, 298 km

Tadej Pogacar (left) just beats Tom Pidcock.

Story of the Tour de France Volume 2Bill and Carol McGann's book The Story of the Tour de France, Vol 2: 1976 - 2018 is available in print, Kindle eBook & Audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the finish city of Sanremo at 1:15 PM, local time: 14C (58F), mostly cloudy, with the wind from the south at 8 km/hr (5 mph). There is a 30% chance of rain at 3:00 PM.

The race: Midway into the race two riders crashed out of the race: Jan Christen (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) & Orluis Aular (Movistar). Christen is an improtant domestique for Tadej Pogacar.

Here's the race organizer's report:

He dreamt it, chased it, even cursed it – but in the end, he’s done it. Tadej Pogačar has won Milano–Sanremo 2026. In the toughest year, when it seemed over after crashing just before the Cipressa. Instead, the man in the rainbow jersey showed not only that he’s the strongest, but that he’s got the grit of a true fighter. Back on the bike, back in the race — and within a couple of kilometres, already on the attack, tearing the peloton apart just like last year.

Bam! Pogacar attacks on the Cipressa and only Tom Pidcock and Mathieu van der Poel can go with him. He attacked again on the hill and could not drop them. They went over the top with a 30-second lead over a group of forty chasers.

Once again, it came down to three: Mathieu van der Poel, also down earlier, and an outstanding Tom Pidcock. But this time, on the Poggio, Van der Poel cracked. Pidcock held firm, stayed glued to Pogačar, and the two flew all the way to the Via Roma.

A drag race to the line – shoulder to shoulder, wheel to wheel – and this time, by just 4 centimetres, Pogačar takes it. The curse is broken. Another chapter in a legend that’s already well underway.

Six and a half hours earlier, 9 riders had gone clear: Martin Marcellusi, Manuele Tarozzi, Lorenzo Milesi, Manlio Moro, Andrea Peron, David Lozano, Alexy Faure Prost, Dario Igor Belletta and Mirco Maestri, stretching their lead to around 6’30”.

Palm trees, the coast, most riders in short sleeves. Toto, I've a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore.

The race unfolded steadily, until crashes began to take their toll – Jan Christen and Michał Kwiatkowski among those forced out. Then came the turning point: a massive crash just before the Cipressa, bringing down almost all the favourites, Pogačar, Van der Poel, Wout van Aert and more.

Oh no! A crash takes down Tadej Pogacar, Mathieu van der Peol, Wout van Aert, Biniam Girmay, among others. They were all able to get back on their bikes.

Chaos — but only briefly. Because as soon as the road tilted upwards, they were all back, even more fired up. With a torn, dirt-stained rainbow jersey, Pogačar didn’t hesitate. Launched by Brandon McNulty and Isaac del Toro, he went again on the Cipressa — and it worked. Despite the slight headwind, only Van der Poel and Pidcock could follow. Over the top, they had more than 30” on the bunch, led by Lidl–Trek and later Visma.

The iconic scene of racers on the coast after the Turchino pass.

The Aurelia tested them, the gap shrinking to just 9 seconds at the foot of the Poggio. But once the climb began, Pogačar was on another level. His first attack dropped Van der Poel — the most dangerous rival for a sprint finish. Pidcock, though, held on. No risks on the descent, everything left for the sprint. Head-to-head. Wheel-to-wheel. Shoulder-to-shoulder. And Pogačar wins.Behind, Van Aert times it perfectly with a finisseur’s move to take third.

Pogacar attacks on the Poggio and drops Van der Poel, but Tom Pidcock held his wheel.

For Pogačar, that’s Monument number 11 — only Eddy Merckx has more, with 19. Just Paris–Roubaix left to complete the full set. And at this rate… it feels like only a matter of time.

Tadej Pogacar wins the 2026 Milano-Sanremo.

Speaking seconds after the finish, winner Tadej Pogacar said: “When I crashed, for a second I’ve thought it was all over. It happened in Imperia, just before the most important part of the race. It was not ideal. Luckily I was quickly back on the bike. There wasn’t much damage to me and the bike. Then I saw my teammates Florian [Vermeersxh] and Felix [Grossschartner]. They gave everything to bring me back to the front. They gave me hope. With no team, I would have gone straight to Sanremo to watch the finish. Before the Poggio, there was some headwind. It wasn’t ideal like last year. I was a bit afraid of Tom Pidcock. He did an amazing race too and it was very close. We all know he’s punchy and fast. I couldn’t wait too long so I launched the sprint but chapeau to him as well”.

Tadej Pogacar just beats Tom Pidock for the big win. They don't get much closer. Wout van Aert has slightly detached himself from the pack and is headed for third.

The course: The 2026 Milano–Sanremo sets off from Pavia, heading north towards Milan, the race’s historic starting point, before reaching the Certosa, where it rejoins the traditional course. After a second passage through Pavia, the peloton ventures onto new roads, crossing Sannazzaro de’ Burgondi and Casei Gerola, before reconnecting with the 2025 route in Voghera. It was there last year that an additional detour through the Pavese area was introduced, passing Rivanazzano and Salice Terme, before rejoining the classic route in Tortona. From that point to the finish, the race follows the road that for more than 110 years has linked Milan to the Ligurian Riviera, passing through Ovada and tackling the Passo del Turchino before descending towards Genova-Voltri.

The race then heads west along the coastline on the SS1 Aurelia, skirting the sea through Varazze, Savona and Albenga (the climb of Le Manie, tackled between 2008 and 2013, is not included), before reaching Imperia. At San Lorenzo al Mare, after the traditional sequence of the “Capi” — Capo Mele, Capo Cervo and Capo Berta — the riders face the two decisive climbs added in the second half of the 20th century: the Cipressa (introduced in 1982) and the Poggio di Sanremo (1961). The Cipressa measures 5.6 km at an average gradient of 4.1%, cresting before a highly technical descent that leads back onto the SS1 Aurelia.

Final kilometers:
With 9 km to go, the peloton hits the foot of the Poggio di Sanremo: 3.7 km at just under 4% on average, with ramps peaking at 8% near the summit. The road narrows slightly, and the first two kilometres feature four hairpin bends, making positioning crucial. The descent is fast and extremely demanding: narrow in places, with a relentless sequence of hairpins, sweeping bends and technical changes of direction before rejoining the Aurelia. The final section of the descent runs through the outskirts of Sanremo. The last 2 km are contested on long urban straights. Notably, with 850 metres remaining there is a left-hand bend at a roundabout, followed by the final corner at 750 metres to go, which opens onto the finishing straight on Via Roma, all on smooth tarmac.
